Gum Disease
While many people believe periodontal disease is an adult problem, gingivitis, the first stage of periodontal disease, is common among children and adolescents.
Gingivitis causes gum bleeding, gum swelling, and redness. Gingivitis is preventable and treatable with regular brushing, flossing, and professional dental care. If left untreated, it can eventually advance to more serious forms of periodontal disease.
A referral to a gum specialist, the periodontist will be made when a more severe form of periodontal disease is suspected.
